I’m 27. Born and raised in suburban Long Island. Acquired culture in Brooklyn, independence in Ecuador, and now debt in the Hamptons, where I attend graduate school for an MFA in Creative Writing.
I write fiction, poetry, nonfiction, plays and screenplays. My mother says these things are “Good! Mostly funny, but also sad. I like that.” Also, I shoot and edit film (with the skills of a five-year-old).
I grew up in a house where “Asshole” and “Dickhead” are terms of endearment. Consequently, I show love with gentle jabs and sassy remarks.
To support my habit of being a student, I have a few part-time jobs. I teach creative writing to middle and high school students with the Young American Writers Project. I tutor the SATs, walk dogs/petsit, and write web content and press releases for various companies, most recently PJ Tool Jewelry. In the past I worked at Image Magazine, a Brooklyn community magazine, where I learned the tools of the trade, and most importantly, that office jobs are not my thing. A few years ago, a few friends and I started Slow Century Magazine, which, currently on hiatus, is worth checking out.
Old Dan Yeller has been around for over three years. It changes with me, and recently, it’s taken a turn for the psychological. I love having open discussions about emotions, personal history, therapy, etc., because it’s still taboo and shouldn’t be. The more you talk about your feelings, the better you feel. Funny how that works.
